Do you believe you have the power to design your life? It’s true, we can’t control everything that happens to us. But what we can control is our reaction.
Does the voice in your head say “I can’t handle this” or “I was born for this”? I’ll tell you a secret… that voice is yours alone. Yes, you get to decide.
Everyone wants to be happy, but it is illusive for so many. Here’s another secret:
Happiness isn’t something that happens to you, happiness is a choice.
You may be scoffing at this thought. In fact, some of you are thinking right now “It’s easy for others to be happy, everything goes well for them! I am dealing with crap!” Right? 😉 Of course, when everything is going smoothly it’s natural to be happy. In contrast, to bounce back when the going gets tough you must be resilient.
So, can you learn to be happier AND more resilient? I have done it and I believe you can too.
As for myself, a happy personality isn’t exactly something I was born with. In contrast, I remember being told as a child that I was negative, sarcastic, and unpleasant to be around! Admittedly I haven’t completely lost my tendency towards scathing sarcasm. 😂
In addition, I was blessed/cursed with the ability to see every possible horrible thing that could happen in a situation. Around our house, we refer to that as the vigilance gene kicking in. 😉 Actually, this is a real thing. A genotype of the serotonin transporter gene is associated with high threat vigilance! Yes, I very well may have been wired as a Nervous Nelly. Sadly, during my younger years, fears and anxieties often kept me in a prison of my own creation.
Fortunately, everything changed when I learned to retrain my thought patterns. At the same time, I started to design the life I wanted instead of letting life just happen to me. As a result, a world of possibility opened up. Of course, the opportunities to change were always there, I just hadn’t been able to see them.
