Since I started doing AFT, I have noticed people have a lot of resistance to affirmations. How about you? Do you love affirmations or hate them?
Since you clicked on this article, I’m assuming you’re at least curious about affirmations and if you need them in your life. 😉 Well, you’re in the right place. I’m a big fan of affirmations, in fact I would say using them consistently changed everything for me. Today we’re going to help you understand how affirmations work and why you should give them a try.
So what exactly is an affirmation? I like this definition:
- affirmation: the assertion that something exists or is true
When we come up with an affirmation, we are stating what we want in life as though it already exists. I know this is where we lose people because that sounds like woo woo. Bear with me, okay? It isn’t magic, it’s the science of how our minds work.
We all carry our own mental programming based on our past experiences. We have a certain framework of how we see ourselves and the world around us. When we try to step outside of that framework by setting big goals or implementing new habits, our subconscious minds are triggered. Our minds just want to protect us, and if what we are doing doesn’t fit safely into our mental framework, the subconscious will do everything possible to reel us back in. This often results in self sabotage.
You see, our brains are a lot like computers. Just like we have to update the software on our devices, we have to update our brains too, or we’re stuck using old programming that doesn’t serve us anymore. And that old programming will slow you down worse than Apple slowing down your old iPhone. 😜 Affirmations help you perform conscious upgrades to the ol’ brain. What seemed true in the past often isn’t serving us in the present. That is why we need to affirm our new, healthy truth into existence.
But maybe you’re thinking “I don’t want to talk to myself. It makes me feel stupid.” Mmhm.. I’ve heard that one a few times. Well, my reluctant Stuart Smalley, I hate to break it to you, but you talk to yourself all day long! 😂 When you do affirmations, you are deciding what you are going to tell yourself, instead of letting those old recordings play willy nilly.
So are you ready to try affirmations? Yes? Yay! Aren’t you excited that somehow what you want will just fall into your lap?!? Well, that would be nice wouldn’t it? 💰😂 Affirmations don’t work that way. We are just putting ourselves in a proper mindset to follow through on the actions needed to get what we want. Once our subconscious is on aligned with our goals, we become a force to be reckoned with. 💪 It may not fall into your lap, but you are going to get it!
Next in our series, we’ll cover how to best use affirmations, so you don’t just feel like a crazy person talking to yourself for no reason. 😜
